While searching for locations for a series of paintings depicting cattle drives along the famous cattle trails of America, Roger Iker discovered the Waggoner home place in Decatur Texas, and began researching the story of the building of the Waggoner Empire. It’s the story of a Texas cattle baron, land an oil. Empire

$225 Edition size 100 s/n A Tribute to the Waggoner Family The Waggoner’s first came to
Texas in 1840, settling just north of Fort Worth. In 1868 W.T. Waggoner, age 16
and his father Dan Waggoner rounded up 5000 head of wild longhorn cattle. W.T.
was put in charge of taking the cattle to market through the treacherous and
lawless territory that lay between Texas and Kansas. W.T. Waggoners hard work
proved to be successful, returning to Texas with profit of $55,000 which laid
the foundation for the Waggoner “Empire”. At the height of its expansion the
Waggoner ranch would encompass six counties covering over 550,000 acres in Texas
with an additional 600,000 acres in grazing land leased from friendly Indian
tribes. The Waggoner family, now
considered the first Texas land and cattle barons, would soon add to their
“Empire” with the discovery of the Electra oil field putting north Texas on
the map in the oil industry. W.T. Waggoner was among the leaders who helped
develop Fort Worth, assigning a team of architects to build the city’s first
“sky scrapper”; the 20 story Waggoner building. The Waggoner family’s
efforts to breed a horse more suited to ranching proved pivotal in the
development of the Quarter Horse breed. Also, the Waggoner family was
instrumental in introducing horse racing to North Texas in the mid 1930’s with
the family owned Arlington Downs in Arlington, Texas. The Waggoner family epitomizes the Texas spirit of hardiness and ingenuity that was necessary to pioneer this great state.
